My son (D) attended an aerospace camp held at Missouri S&T last month. To say that he loved it would be an understatement. When someone asks him about the camp he just keeps talking and talking and talking and talking…well you get the picture. You eventually have to cut him off to get him to stop talking about all the fun he had at camp. One of his favorite things was the e-mission that was done in conjunction with NASA. The campers put their skills to the test when presented with a mock solar storm hitting the International Space Station. They had to solve the radiation, atmosphere, health and power issues that were caused by the solar storm. How cool is that?
After staying in the college dorms for camp, D informed me that he felt older in some way. I think he had a valid point. This camp was the first time he was “on his own”. Staying in the dorm with just a roommate gave him a sense of independence that I think is good for a ten year old to experience.
D is already planning next summer. He wants to go back to camp at Missouri S&T and maybe Space Camp. I guess we will have to wait to see what summer adventures he decides on for next year.
It is our job as homeschooling parents to find opportunities like this for our children. All of the universities near us have a variety of programs. D just tends to find the science related ones because he is my future engineer.
Have your children attended any cool camps this summer? Leave a comment and let me know about it. Never know where we might travel to next summer just for some fun at camp.
