Thoughtful Thursday ~ So, why do you homeschool?

We just returned home from a rehearsal my son had for his choir performances that are tomorrow.  My daughter and I went out to eat and then returned to the venue to catch a sneak peek of the performance.  There were several moms sitting around waiting for other homeschoolers.  The moms were chatting about anything and everything while the younger children played.

The question of the night was – so why do you homeschool?  I don’t know if this was a popular question because there were several moms there that just started homeschooling this year or if it was because the cold winter months are enough to make anyone question their sanity, but I was asked the question at least a half dozen times during the night.

When someone asks you this, they don’t want a hour long answer highlighting a long list of what you perceive as the positive effects of homeschooling.  They want a quick and simple answer.  The answer might be a springboard that will launch you into that hour long discussion, but keep the initial answer brief.

So what is Heathen Mom’s quick and simple answer to the question?  I know this will come as a shock to everyone……..

We homeschool for academic reasons.  The opportunities that homeschooling opens up to our children are limitless.

In less than twenty words I can give a brief explanation of why we homeschool.  I know this Thoughtful Thursday is late in the day (dang rehearsal, lol), but I hope we have a few people participate.

So, why do you homeschool?  Leave a comment telling me why you homeschool.  Keep it twenty words or less.

Have a great night!

It’s the best fit for how our family lives. We can live and learn together, no matter where we are.

We homeschool for freedom. Freedom to do what we want, when we want….freedom from peer pressure….freedom to take our sweet time….freedom to go really fast…freedom from bullying…freedom from homework…yada yada yada

I love knowing that my daughter is safe & academically challenged. Using K-12 assures me that we’re getting the best of both worlds!!!

I homeschool because I have two kids within the autistic spectrum, and the public schools here are not equipped to teach them. At all. The public schools here are barely qualified to keep them all day, much less teach them.

The long answer involves learning styles, anxiety levels, the rudeness of suburban children, and my last kleenex of the kids’ 2nd grade year. I’ll let you guess the rest.

I always knew I would homeschool my child. Learning should be in a loving and stress free environment…at home:)

Great post. I just hopped over here after I found you on Twitter.

We homeschool to maintain the flexible lifestyle that being self employed has provided, and for academic reasons.

We homeschool to be free of bullies, to be safe and to be free from the box that public education often puts children in. I also don’t want to miss one thing in my children’s lives.

I just found you from another blog.
We homeschool because I’m rebellious. I didn’t like the fact that most families in our small town sent their kids to school at 3 years old. I just couldn’t do it and started teaching my oldest at home. I haven’t stopped.

I homeschool because I want to spend more time with my children and I’m confident my kids are better off with their family than in school. I think my 8 year old’s top reason would be freedom. My 6 and 3 year olds haven’t given it much thought yet. ;)
